Potatoes on the Isle of Berneray

Potato Blossom, Isle of Berneray

During the 19th century, lots of potatoes were grown on the Isle of Berneray. The island exported large quantities of potatoes to the neighbouring Isle of Harris. By that time much of the bog land on the hill sides was converted to lazy beds. You can still see the characteristic patterns on satellite images (for example on Google Maps) and of course, on the ground. Today, potatoes are still grown on the sandy Macchair lands behind West Beach.
