A Sea of Daisies
The small Island of Berneray in the Outer Hebrides has been a major provider of potatoes for neighbouring islands, particularly the Isle of Harris. Potatoes were and are grown on the macchair behind the dunes. Macchair is a manmade landscape. Over centuries the sandy soil behind beaches and dunes has been fertilized by the local inhabitants with seaweeds. Potatoes are grown one year. In the following year the soil is left for fallow and the fields are taken over by a sea of daisies. From the series Hebridean Journey. Isle of Berneray, Outer Hebrides, Scotland.
