The Old Graveyard, Isle of Berneray, Outer Hebrides

The Old Graveyard, Isle of Berneray, Outer Hebrides, Scotland

I hope I am not going to bore you with my love for old graveyards in the Outer Hebrides. This one is located on the small Island of Berneray. Berneray is only about 2 miles wide and 3 miles long. The island is part of the Outer Hebrides, off the northwest coast of Scotland. Today, Berneray has a population of about 135 inhabitants. In the 19th century, the island carried a much larger population. A witness of this time is the Old Graveyard in the north of the island. The gravestones tell lots of stories. You can see how life expectancy has grown. In the 1940s, many people died in their mid sixties. Today, they pass away in their late seventies and eighties. You can find gravestones of young fishermen who died in their thirties when boats were lost at sea.
